Injection molding tolerance depends on material, part geometry, shrinkage, wall thickness, tooling accuracy, gate location, cooling, warpage, and measurement method. Tight tolerances are possible in some features, but they should be applied only where function requires them.
What Affects Tolerance
- Material shrinkage and glass fiber content.
- Part size, wall thickness, ribs, bosses, and flatness requirements.
- Gate location, cooling balance, and mold temperature control.
- Tool construction, parting line, sliders, lifters, and inserts.
- Measurement fixtures, inspection method, and environmental conditions.
Critical vs Non-Critical Dimensions
Buyers should mark critical dimensions clearly on the 2D drawing. Applying tight tolerance to every dimension can increase tooling cost, inspection time, and production difficulty without improving the product.
